Instead of the normal Bank Holiday, the Queen celebrated fifty years of service by giving us an extra day's holiday on my birthday weekend. It would be a shame to waste it, so we went backpacking. And I visited the Falkirk Wheel on the way home - the world's first rotary boat lift, which opened a couple of weeks earlier.
